Hospital - Outpatient Medical Coder
Hospital – Outpatient Medical Coder

Schedule: Part time or Full Time; with the possibility of remote work after a probationary period
Reports to: HIM Director
Position Summary: Accountable for the conversion of diagnoses and treatment procedures into ICD-10-CM and CPT codes. Requires skill in the sequencing of diagnoses/procedures to optimize reimbursement and ensure that records are coded in an accurate and timely manner. Previous experience in hospital outpatient coding is preferred.

Essential Functions:

 Reviews medical record thoroughly to ascertain all diagnoses/procedures.
 Utilizes computerized coding/abstracting equipment.
 Ensures sequencing of codes is completed according to established guidelines for optimum reimbursement.
 Reviews medical records for completeness and abstracts clinical data such as diseases, operations, procedures, and therapies.
 Must be familiar with all medical record documentation requirements.
 Consistently follows established coding guidelines and coding ethics policies.
 Ensures complete documentation is present in the medical record to substantiate code assignment by communicating regularly with providers and clinics.
 Maintains at least a 95% accuracy standard.
 Monitors workloads for deadline management.
 Acts as a resource person to hospital staff for coding and may provide education regarding coding changes/issues.
 Maintains a good working relationship within the department, other departments and medical staff.
 Performs quality improvement functions through data collection and documentation review.

Education/Experience/Knowledge:

 High school graduate or equivalent
 Coding credential from an industry-approved organization, such as AHIMA or AAPC
 Knowledge of diagnoses/procedures in accordance with CPT and ICD-10-CM coding principles
 One or more years of previous hospital experience as a coder is preferred
